Chicago is found in the state of Illinois, a part of the Midwestern region of the United States of America. The metropolitan area is located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan within the naturally occurring Chicago, Calumet, and Des Plaines River Basins. The original settlers of the city settled around the confluence of the Northern and Southern Branches of the Chicago River in an area called "Wolf Point"[A1]. The city of Chicago has channelized parts of the Des Plaines and Chicago Rivers to make the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. The flow in the Chicago River was actually reversed to empty the Chicago area of water more efficiently [A2].
